Challenge

Scopely spends millions of dollars on licensing agreements, development, and marketing to launch a new game title in their portfolio. They wanted a concrete methodology for evaluating those investments on various intellectual property and benchmarking them against one another.

Solution

We developed a proprietary methodology for our client to effectively compare IP across 5 variables: Film, TV, Games, Social Media, and Search. We gathered and evaluated 120,000 social media data points per IP across 12 months, which pulled in search volume, qualitative and quantitative research IP revenues, streaming and TV series in market, box office receipts, game sales and popularity per IP, and social chatter across YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, and more.

We then created a data science model to create uniformity across the data and index IP against each other into a benchmark of value which we created into a proprietary ‘Franchise Score’. The Franchise score aggregated all the data above into a single number that Scopely could use to evaluate each IP against one another.

Results

The research study was presented to the c-suite decision makers of the organization, general management and investment teams. The study provided a future rubric for IP evaluation, identified the most promising IP out of the reviewed franchises, and was a key deciding factor in Scopely’s next major game.
